Probiotics are very beneficial in fighting acne.  Simply put, probiotics help acne quite effectively.Probiotics are micro-organisms that will help clear your skin and bring back that confidence.  Because of the good gut bacteria still living within the contents of each probiotic dosage.  They will improve it.

What Are Probiotics?

Probiotics are basically yeasts and bacteria.  That unlike other types of bacteria or yeasts, are good for the overall health of the human body.  

They are especially good for the human digestive system.  Which in turn helps keep other areas of the body healthy as well.  Probiotics are found naturally in the body.  They can be replenished in the form of supplements.  

Or, by consuming certain kinds of foods such as yogurt or sauerkraut.  Though mostly used to treat stomach/digestion related conditions.  Probiotics have also been used to treat eczema, urinary/vaginal issues, oral problems, allergies etc.

 

How Can They Treat Your Skin?

Will probiotics help acne? They can because they are full of good gut bacteria.Strangely enough, probiotics were used as a supplementary form of treatment for chronic diarrhea.  Which is a common side effect of antibiotic use.  

Later studies showed that probiotics were quite beneficial in the treatment of acne as well.  For instance, they can be used to address a wide range of factors that lead to the formation of acne.

These include:

♦  Creating a bacterial balance in the system.  

Acne sufferers have been known to have reduced levels of stomach acid.  Which can cause harmful bacteria to thrive within.  Probiotics prevent this by restoring the balance.  Ultimately inhibiting the development of acne.

♦  Inhibiting harmful bacterial growth.

Probiotics can prevent the increase of harmful bacteria.  Especially the ones that are present on the skin and in the gut.

♦  Regulating sebum production.

Probiotics can help reduce the amount of sebum being produced.  Which in turn reduces the chances of inflammation.

 

How Can Probiotics Help Acne So Well?

There are many ways in which probiotics can be used to treat acne.

 

♦  Diet and Supplements: 

Since acne issues can be partially caused due to problems in the gut.  Probiotics can be used to address this.  

Our bodies are work as one single unit.  Which means a problem in one area can result in other areas of the body being affected.  As mentioned earlier, one of the problems that occurs in the gut is diarrhea.  

Which sometimes (and ironically) can occur as a side effect from consuming acne treating antibiotics.  These antibiotics eliminate both the bad and the good bacteria.  Resulting in a hormonal imbalance.

The hormonal imbalance further leads to the formation of acne.  You need to add good flora to your treatment via supplements or food.  Probiotics help acne by replenishing the good bacteria.  And, therefore maintain the balance between good and bad bacteria.  

This regulates the hormone production and keeps the acne in check.

Probiotics have still living bacteria that are very good for the gut's natural balanceProblems in the gut can also come from a combination of stress and unhealthy food.  

When stress is combined with low nutrient foods or even medication.  The digestive system finds it hard to function at an optimum level.  This leads to an increase in the population of harmful bacteria.  This causes a bacterial imbalance all over again.  

Gradually, the lining of the gut becomes weak.  And, allows toxins to get mixed with the bloodstream  This leads to inflammation and eventually acne.

There’s been lots of research in probiotic treatment for acne.  Positive results has led to a lot of manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies to take action.  To start developing topical applications that contain probiotics.  

These products include creams, masks, cleansers etc.  And, they work in a variety of ways.  For instance, some of these topical applications can be used to create ‘bacterial interference’.  They basically prevent an immune reaction in the body.  This can arise when the immune system reacts to the bacteria present on skin.  

The immune reaction has been known to cause acne flare-ups.  The probiotic topical applications prevent the bacteria from being detected by the skin cells.  Therefore, inhibiting the immune reaction.  Certain probiotics also use a calming approach.  They calm the areas of skin cells that are responsible for triggering immune reactions.

Studies are also being conducted to identify probiotics that produce antimicrobial substances.  Which can directly eliminate harmful bacteria. Soon, these type of probiotics will be used in topical acne treatments.

 

The Facts About Acne

If there’s one thing that causes severe distress among a lot of people, it’s acne.  Acne is a skin condition that affects millions of people across the globe.  Statistics indicate that around 20% of adults and 85% of teenagers suffer from acne.

Over the years, multiple types of treatments have been developed to address this condition. Most of the treatments, however, center their objectives around 3 aspects of acne treatment.  These either begin with stopping the production of oil in the skin.  Secondly,  preventing or eliminating the growth of bacteria.  Lastly, exfoliating the patient’s skin.

Other treatments, such as the use of topical and oral antibiotics are also fairly popular. And, they shouldn’t be.  All in all, there are a wide array of treatments being available.  But the majority of them do not render the needed effect in completely curing acne.

 

So the Importance of Probiotics?

Ongoing research in acne treatment has shown that a long term answer may lie in the use of probiotics.  The idea here is not killing acne causing bacteria.  

Instead, probiotics can help treat acne by pushing out the harmful bacteria.  The basic premise here is that the “bad” bacteria can be eliminated by simply adding “good” bacteria”.

The human body is already home to a vast species of bacteria.  Out of which, the majority are quite harmless.  In fact, some of them might even prove to be advantageous.  

This method of using good bacteria to overrun the bad bacteria is not new.  It has been in use for quite some time.  But, this is the first time that medical experts have seen its effects in treating acne.

 

How Is Acne Caused?

Formation of skin acne or pimple. The sebum in the clogged pore promotes the growth of a certain bacteria called Propionibacterium Acnes. This leads to the redness and inflammation associated with pimples.1.  Acne occurs when the pores in human skin become clogged.  This is due to the accumulation of dead skin cells and oil.  The clogged pore attracts harmful bacteria like Propionibacterium acnes.  

2.  It settles in the pores to feed on the accumulated oil and dead skin cells.  This further results in a process that leads to inflammation.  Which causes the appearance of acne in the form of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, blemishes etc.  

3.  A rise in the hormone levels has also been attributed to the development of acne, especially among adolescents.  Other causes that aggravate acne include the consumption of foods rich in fat and the use of oil based cosmetics on the skin.

4.  The hormone called testosterone plays an indirect role in acne formation. Testosterone is what fuels the production of sebum which is oil secretion on the skin.  

5.  It also fuels keratin (a type of protein).  Both of which are responsible for forming the lining around the hair follicle.

6.  Keratin helps build skin cells.  But when these skin cells start shedding, they end up sticking together because of the excessive sebum production in the follicle.

7.  As a result, they clog the pores and lead to the enlargement of the follicles.  This process, eventually leads to bacteria getting contained within the pores as well.  Although some of the bacteria getting contained in the enlarged follicles can actually help prevent the formation of acne.

 

Why Don’t Traditional Acne Treatments Work?

Lactobacillus bacteria. This lactic acid-producing bacteria is used in the production of yoghurt and other fermented foods. The problem with traditional treatments is that they have a limited effect in curing acne.  The acne formation is only inhibited temporarily.  Eventually, the acne resurfaces once the treatment ends.

The other issue with using traditional acne treatments is that they have a few disadvantages as well.  For instance, antibiotics tend to target a broad spectrum of bacteria apart from the ones causing acne.

A common side effect of acne treating antibiotics is diarrhea and abdominal pain.  This occurs as a result of the broad spectrum of gut bacteria antibiotics target including good.  Which are actually helpful in terms of regulating the body’s neurological, endocrine, and immune systems.

As already mentioned, ellimination of gut bacteria results in further hormonal imbalances.  Leading to the very same conditions that cause the onset of acne.

 

The Studies Say It All

Several studies have been conducted to study the effects of probiotics in acne treatment.  Most of them have produced positive results.

For instance, a study in Korea observed 56 patients acne patients who were asked to consume dairy products that were fermented using the lactobacillus bacteria.  In a period of 12 weeks, the patients showed probiotics help acne in terms of reduced sebum production and acne lesions.

In another study conducted in Italy.  Two groups of acne patients were put under treatment.  One group was provided with probiotic supplements along with their usual treatment.  While the other group was asked to continue their regular treatment without probiotics.  It was noticed that the group taking probiotic supplements showed a much quicker and better recovery from acne.

The several testimonials from people who underwent probiotic treatment clearly point to the fact that it worked.  The proof rests with these studies.  Although there maybe several other factors that influence acne production.  Such as poor hygiene or naturally high hormone production.  

 

So What Do You Do?

Will probiotics help your acne? Certainly, yes. You need good gut bacteria.Take a probiotic supplement!  The verdict is in, probiotics help acne.  Or.  Eat foods that are full of good gut bacteria.  These include:
